Br. Miguel Hutjens (1922) originally worked in primary and specialized education.
In 1951 he was appointed teacher in handicraft and drawing at the teacher training college in Maastricht for those young men who were interested in becoming a brother FIC.From 1951 until 1956 he attended courses at the academy for applied arts in Maastricht. He proved to be very talented and became a competent painter / drawer. One recognizes his style immediately. He has a great preference for the figurative and stylising arts.
His drafts are made very carefully. He precisely "moulds" and "kneads" as a potter. He strongly "builds" his work with clear elements in order to reach a good composition. Colours mostly play a secondary role.
Painting and drawing he has crossed the valley of the river Jeker far into Belgium. As from 1967 he was able to devote himself completely to his artistic work and he developed a strong preference for wall paintings. In Spain in particular he found exquisite opportunities for these paintings in the buildings of the newly erected boarding school for FIC candidates in Miranda de Ebro. Also in the guests-department of our house De Beyart at Maastricht he made a big wall painting representing Creation:
One of his beautiful and characteristic works is The Disciples of Emmaus.
