WORKING GROUP
MISSIONARY AWARENESS
In January of this year, 2001, Bro. Ton Kropman, who works in a crisis centre, became a member of the intercongregational Working group for Missionary Awareness (WMB).
The Cooperating Dutch Congregations of Brothers (SBCN) created this working group in September 1979, assigning them in the Memorandum of establishment the following aim / task:
Ton Kropman
The Working group for Missionary Awareness wants to be an informative, advisory and stimulating organ for the councils and the members of the brothers' congregations concerning what is alive in the Netherlands in the missionary field .

From within the cooperating brothers' congregations the working group also functions as a sounding board for the Central Missionary Consultation of Religious (CMBR).

During the past 20 years, on the one hand, the commission has been active, internally, maintaining contact via dialogue, study and reflection with the brothers it represents and ,on the other hand, a great many brothers (later also friends and interested persons) have taken part in days of conference, encounter and reflection.

A choice from the themes:
  • reflection: "vocation: hobby or mission?"
  • lecture and exchange of experience concerning the Disablement Insurance Act among ‘the marginal side of the Netherlands'
  • reflection concerning the conciliar process
  • reflective day on "500 years America"
  • study day on the Kairos Document
  • visit to new religious communities
  • in search of mission in a project for the care of Dutch street children
  • within the working group: extensive study of and comment on the document of the Dutch Conference of Religious, named: "draft vision document religious 2001"
  • ‘listening to the marginal side of the Netherlands' via information from the social service of Eindhoven
  • motivating and inspiring study day with a Muslim imam
A new emphasis

Now, 20 years after its establishment, the emphasis has been shifted from advising the councils to making an effort to maintain our own missionary awareness, and to gathering (and spreading) inspiring and motivating information about missionary activities and projects in the Netherlands.
In that context next autumn a visit will be paid to an Egidius group and / or some larger group whose members work and live together.
At such meetings some 30 brothers come together to ‘celebrate' a good day in an inspiring and motivating way and thus help one another to maintain their missionary awareness.
