ENTOMOLOGICAL RESEARCH
Dutch
November 24, 1990, Brother Virgilius Lefeber received the Uyttenboogaart-Eliasen-award. This award, granted only once in four years, was in honour of his work for this foundation that aims at the promotion of entomological research in The Netherlands

At that moment Virgilius for already 16 years had done research and had composed his own collections. At the same time he spent a lot of time and energy in describing the data from many other Dutch collections.

Based on that research and descriptive work he himself has published about insects with stings and membranous wings and contributed to the publication of several atlasses about the distribution of wasps and bees in The Netherlands. Together with the ants the wasps and bees are the sting-possessing (Aculeata) within the much bigger family of the Hymenoptera (insects with membranous wings).
On top of that he has made many efforts to save several areas in the province of Limburg that have a high entomological value.

The most recent publication to which Virgilius has contributed a lot is the Provisional Atlas of the Dutch Bees, published in 1999. This (provisional) atlas is made to serve as a basis for the growing number of field-workers. Br. Virgilius in the Preface: "We hope that this atlas will be a strong impetus to the fieldstudy of these interesting insects and will contribute to a better protection of the Dutch wild bees."
