This Centre for Encounter and Inspiration wants to be a hospitable place for different groups of persons: a. Persons who have a difficulty in making contact and who, because of that, are lonely. In particular handicaped, elderly and left-alone persons for whom the normal provisions in town are not available or cannot be reached, or who need a hand to start using these provisions. b. Persons, mainly young, coming from other cultures, in which life in community is highly valued, and who feel lost in our Western society. This can be young asylum seekers and other alochtonic persons. c. A third group are persons who, invited or on their own request, participate in activities aiming at formation, meditation, creativity, philosophy of life and the like. d. Persons who are active in their neighbourhood or parish. For these person the Centre will organize training courses to improve and deepen their involvement.

The Centre is an initiative of the Brothers FIC at the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Congregation in 1990. However, from the very beginning a group of enthusiastic other persons in Maastricht have been involved and have contributed a major part in the setup of this Centre. A Foundation "In de Rooden Leeuw" has been set up and is responsible for the policy and development of this Centre. The Centre is located in the house where the FIC Congregation started in 1840, and which, because of that, may be considered the 'cradle' of the Congregation. The Congregation has completely renovated the building, dating from 1789, and has rented the ground floor and the first floor to the Foundation In de Rooden Leeuw. Next to a board of the Foundation, which has the final responsibility, the Centre is run by two part time co-ordinators. These persons are assisted by a number of carefully selected volunteers. The Centre started its first activities Fall 1999.
