F.I.C. in JAKARTA

A SURVEY

Up to 1965 all the establishments of the FIC Brothers were to be found in Central Java, round the volcano Merapi. In 1965 a junior and a senior secondary school for boys was set up in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

The reasons to start this establishment:

- the wish to have a pied-à-terre for all comers;
- the desirability to have an establishment close to the Ministry of Education in view of administrative interests;
-the direct reason was: a request from the Archbishop of Jakarta, Mgr A.Djajaseputra SJ to start a secondary school for boys, alongside the one for girls run by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Charles Borromeo in Kebayoran, in South-Jakarta.

A) July 1965 saw the start of a junior (SMP) and a senior (SMA, later SMU) secondary school for boys managed by the school foundation Pangudi Luhur in Semarang. The two schools now have about 500 pupils each. They started in the school building at Brawijaya IV in Kebayoran Baru, both exclusively for boys, in accordance with the wish of the Archbishop.

About 1970 the building proved to be too small for the steadily growing number of pupils, and so the SMP moved to Cipeté, south of Kebayoran Baru, to a new location. As the distance to the girls'school was longer now, it was decided to open these two schools for both boys and girls. The SMA/U has continued as a boys'school so far.

B) In 1973 a primary school (SD) and a kindergarten (TK) were added on in Cipeté, more to the south of Kebayoran Baru. The SD comprises 6 courses and has grown into a school with 4 parallel classes, the TK having become triple, which shows that they addressed a real need. When they started, the region was scarcely populated, with a lot of gardens. Now it has become a specific part of the large town. The total number of pupils is about 1000. (situation May, 2001)

C) 1983 saw the start of a school for deaf children in West-Jakarta, named SLB/B Pangudi Luhur.

This is a very intensive form of education: the classes may not exceed 10 pupils. Besides teaching in class all the pupils also receive individual speech training to teach them to speak properly. Pupils who have learned to speak well and can lip-read, proceed to general education.

D) In 1999 at the request of the parish priest of St. Servatius', R.Kurris SJ, an SMU was started in Kampung Sawah, east of Jakarta. There were two Catholic SMPs there, but no SMU. This is in a district with a poor indigenous population ("Betawi"), for whom there was no possibility yet to proceed to further education.

Since it was set up, the school has received a lot of attention. Yayasan Pangudi Luhur has planned a sizeable building, the first phase of which has been completed and is in full use already. The second phase should follow soon.

After having been the principal of the SMU Bro. Michael has, for many years now, been assisting the Catholic weekly "HIDUP" (= LIFE), which, though it is the property of the archdiocese of Jakarta, is circulated all over Indonesia, and even abroad. With a circulation of about 40,000 copies it reaches many people that need reliable Catholic information.

Every year on December 8, the feast Mary Immaculate,the patron saint's day of the Congregation and also of our schools, there is a solemn celebration attended by all the brothers and the staff, alternately in the auditorium of one of the schools.
