F.I.C. in JAKARTA

SCHOOL FOR DEAF CHILDREN

The year 1983 saw the start of a school for deaf children in West-Jakarta, named SLB/B Pangudi Luhur. This is a very intensive form of education: the classes may not exceed 10 pupils. Besides teaching in class all the pupils also receive individual speech training to teach them to speak properly. Pupils who have learned to speak well and can lip-read, proceed to general education.

The school begins with toddlers from the age of 2 upwards. They are guided and trained to use hearing aids so that they become attentive to surrounding sounds. At the age of 4 they pass to the TK division, which is a four-year course. After this they go the eight-year SD, after which they are supposed to be able to take the final exam of the regular SD and to be able to go to the regular SMP. For pupils who are not able to do this, the school also offers a technical-vocational training for, among other trades, being a tailor, a cook and confectioner, a hairdresser, a beauty specialist.

The whole institute has about 250 pupils of 2 to 21 years old. There is no boarding, but the children have their lunches at school, for they may come from far away.

In the school grounds we find 4 units: the TK (comprising 8 rooms), the SD (18 rooms), the technical school and a 4th in which the brothers live.

In the technical school the brothers collaborate with 2 sisters, Daughters of Mary and Joseph, who have had many years experience teaching deaf children in Wonosobo, Central Java. Other Sister assist too or are training here.
