EDUCATIONAL CENTRE LOUIS RUTTEN
TALCA - CHILE
This educational institution is located in a backward area of Talca, a town in the central valley of Chile.
At present it offers, among others, courses in woodwork, motor-assembly and secretarial work.
Here we show you some pictures about the present life and work at this educational centre.

| It is important for our school to take part regularly in all kinds of activities that are organised in Talca. In this picture we represent the school at the FITAL, an annual exhibition of regional products and of various technologies. We won the second prize |

Woodwork is one of the three subjects that are taught at our school. In our Seventh Region wood is one of the most important sources of income. The Chilean State tries to improve the quality. A good future may be in store for our youth, provided they are well prepared for their tasks |
| When we started the school, we were repeatedly told that quality is very important. Gradually the pupils begin to understand that they have to deliver products of quality. At the moment we have to do with the problem of tempo: if we cannot finish it today, tomorrow is another day! |

Administration too is a specialty that the pupils might opt for. This does not only mean becoming a secretary. They may also specialise to become a storekeeper or salesperson. Much will depend on practice. In this picture you see a group of pupils who at school have had the opportunity to act as receptionists, which they did to perfection. They are perfectly dressed, but to be able to do this they sometimes have to borrow things from others, which for them is no problem. |
| Gladys is a student secretary, who last year performed the national dance, the ‘cueca', at a school party. This dance is executed in couples. She danced as a real Chilean ‘huasa', dressed in the Chilean flag. |
 |

 |
In the course of years it became clearer and clearer that the specialties woodwork and administration alone cannot attract sufficient pupils. Therefore after an investigation we have opted for the specialty ‘motor assembly'. A specialty which is very popular among the pupils. Gradually we are building up this specialty. For just as woodwork, motorcar assembly is expensive. It is meant for both boys and girls. |

The Centro Educacional Luis Rutten every year also organises six-monthly courses for unemployed youngsters. A programme financed by the State. Last year one of the courses was in ‘iron construction', which was offered with a view to fixing the dome of the chapel. In the picture the dome is going to be hoisted on to the roof. |
| At long last the chapel is finished. We have been working at it for more than one year and a half. You will understand this, when you know that the work was done by pupils, teachers and parents. The round building invites us to really feel together. Every one present will always feel involved with everything .
Hardly anything of the material used is new: most comes from an old school of the brothers in Talca which was pulled down. Bro. Gé van Vugt is at the door. |

The interior of our chapel. The chapel was built with many gifts. The wood of the ceiling was given by a building company which is constructing houses round our school. The lamp with a diameter of two metres was made by an inhabitant of the district. We have put the names of biblical figures on the lamp. The round wooden windows were made by pupils who are taught woodwork at school |
| Sport is very important for our young people. In this picture our pupils are engaged in a ping-pong competition with other schools. On the back wall you see paintings done by a group of artists from our district. |

Volley ball championship |

Above we mentioned that we try to participate in exhibitions. In this picture you see pupils busy constructing stands for such an exhibition. We gained the second prize. |
| Our symbol: a dove. Round the dove you see the name of our school. |
 |
| The facade of the school. Last year the pupils themselves put up the text, which reads: Brothers of the Immaculate Conception, in Chile for fifty years. |
 |
 |
| Just a group of pupils who are now in the fourth form of secondary education, the top form. They wear a kind of school uniform: a sports shirt with a dove, our symbol. |
