Maggi's House Collapsed

Er is de afgelopen weken veel gebeurd. Allereerst de regen. We zitten midden in het regenseizoen en soms is het te veel. Huizen die niet goed gebouwd zijn (vaak met modderstenen) zakken als puddinkjes in elkaar met alle nare gevolgen vandien. Zo was onze gepensioneerde wasvrouw, Maggi, enkele maanden geleden zo trots dat ze haar eigen woning kon betrekken. Ze is er in Mei ingetrokken en afgelopen maandag 11 augustus na heveige regenval is het hele zaakje in elkaar gestort. Afschuwelijk, maar waar, zie foto. Dan voel ik me zo machteloos; hadden ze het gebouwtje maar beter opgezet en je weet wel..... Tegelijk waren haar middelen heel beperkt en vond ze het een geweldig resultaat dat ze dit had kunnen doen. Vol trots zat ze elke dag met haar kleinkinderen op de binnenplaats en zag met voldoening haar bonen rond het huis groeien en dan plotseling dit......
Ik probeer mensen nabij te zijn en hoe doe je dat in deze situatie?????

Quite a lot has happened over the past week. We are in the middle of the rainy season and sometimes it is too much. Houses which have not been built solidly (often with mud-bricks and poor foundation) collapse like pudding with all the nasty consequences. This has been the case with our former laundry lady, Maggi, who went on pension last year.

With the little money she got, she managed to build two rooms and she was so proud that she had accomplished that. She moved in last May. Last Monday 11th August all her efforts collapsed after a heavy and long rain. Terrible – see below photograph.

Now I feel completely helpless: if only they had planned the building better…etc. She had very limited means and was oh so proud that she had accomplished that!!!! Proudly she sat every day in the courtyard with her grand children and was so happy to see her beans and corn grow around the house and then suddenly this….. I am trying to be close to people, but how do you do that in such a situation???????
