WORKSHOP FOR LOCAL BURSARS – GHANA PROVINCE
There was a one-day workshop for local bursars in the Ghana Province on Saturday 20th March, 2010.
The aims of the workshop were to: Provide an opportunity for the bursars to share their experiences with one another. Support and empower them with the right attitude and skills towards their responsibilities.
Come to a more unified financial administration within the province, particularly with regard to financial reporting.
Help the process of improving a sense of accountability throughout the province. Ensure the reliability of financial reporting by local bursars and also ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of financial operations.
This workshop took place at the St. Louis Formation Centre, Wa. All local bursars of the communities or their representatives were present. After the welcome address by the Provincial Superior, the Provincial Treasure took them through a brainstorming exercise where the bursars shared their expectations of the workshop. This was followed by challenges they meet as bursars.
There was also a practical exercise on the structure (model) of monthly financial statements, analysis of financial statements, managing community financial resources, the importance of planning, monitoring of expenses, financial reporting and discussions in the communities and keeping financial records (files and filing). The workshop also provided opportunity for the bursars to discuss with the provincial treasurer how to keep in touch with each other to limit misunderstandings.
The workshop was seen to be successful because all participants felt they learnt a lot from each other and from the workshop. It was also a relief to the bursars as they felt their difficulties were also the difficulties of others and that they were not in isolation.
